--Police on WiFi Search and Secure Mission in Mumbai
(January 13, 2009)
Police in Mumbai, India, along with groups of volunteers, are scouring
areas of the city for unsecured WiFi connections. Prior to physical
attacks in Delhi and Ahmedabad, email messages claiming responsibility
for the attacks were sent over such networks. When an unsecured access
point is discovered, police have the authority to issue a notice to the
owner directing that it be secured. Those not complying with the
notices could then receive notices under the Criminal Procedure Code.
Both homes and businesses are subject to the requirement.
