[ogWiFi] Wireless access for a whole community...How to do it

"Private spaces like residences, whether single or multi-unit are better
served by other technologies."

More and more I am looking to fibre, as a few people have pointed out
DSL gets split a fair bit. Still looking for a sustainable and
accessible business model for fibre to a housing community. Just need
more TV signal to shove down the pipe, and those are hard to secure.

I still think there is a way to bridge the digital divide and I think
starting something small helps the cause.

Cheers

I definitely want to work something with OGWIFI if the
group is
interested. I figure the lack of funds to pay membership
will keep that
in the long term future, but something we can start
forging right away
		IMHO.

ofWifi is about putting Wifi in Public spaces. Private spaces
like residences, whether single or multi-unit are better served by other
technologies. Michael is correct that 1 DSL/Cable link won't support 230
units. I would think that 1 link for every 10-12 units would be as far
as you could push it (20 links or so). Large bandwidths have turned the
web into a content rich extravaganza where every 2nd site uses Flash so
bandwidth expectations by website developers are high.

Also, you WILL have to have some sort of abuse control mechanism
(bandwidth or rate limiting) in place to prevent the abusers from
degrading the experience too much for other users.
